A timeline for the development of the iLRN XR Resource Exchange

# CONTEXT

At present, immersive learning suffers from a paradox: it is rich in innovation, yet poor in cumulative knowledge. Projects are showcased briefly—at conferences, in papers, or on isolated websites—then often disappear as platforms sunset, funding ends, or teams move on. Successful projects and insightful experiments are either forgotten or known to just a few specialists.

# NEEDS

Despite the proven benefits of immersive media in education, two of the greatest barriers to their widespread adoption are:

\- Difficulty in identifying high-quality XR materials

\- Lack of understanding how to use XR materials in practice (integration into curriculum, classroom workflow, evaluations, etc.)

# VISION

A curated, accessible collection of XR materials, rich in metadata, which leverages the collective expertise of the iLRN organization (a naturally selected community of experts in XR and education) to gather and share:

\- Expert recommendations to identify high quality XR materials

\- Structured evaluations of their pros and cons

- Use-case testimonials for real-life use

A database specially designed to gather and structure this particular metadata. Conceived to be expandable and interoperable (following IEEE, CEN and Dublin Core standards) and in compliance with FAIR Open Science Principles.

# WEB INTERFACE

Masters students in Software Design &amp; Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences Campus, Vienna under direction of Dipl.Ing. Andrea Horvath, design a web interface inflected to the needs of educators, making it easy to search and filter resources, expert recommendations and use cases

# FOCUS GROUP

The iLRN Resource Exchange Focus group (representative experts from the immersive learning community) test the database and web interface design, adding their recommended resources, and testing searches for different educational scenarios

# iLRN 2026 WORKSHOP

The working group conducts a "flipped workshop" at the iLRN 2026 Conference to collect data from the experts who are in attendance, using the database and website as a test case. The focus is on gathering resource recommendations, evaluations and use-cases, as well as evaluating the website. Staff follows up by filling out technical fields for each recommended resource at a later time, with supervision of the iLRN Scientific Quality Team.

# REDESIGN

The Focus Group and iLRN Circle of Scholars evaluate the database and website design in light of the workshop test cases, and make suggestions for refining the design. Redesign is repeated as needed. The Masters students are longer available at this stage to make design changes, so funding is needed for website completion

# BETA VERSION

The Resource Exchange is shared with a limited group of Beta users for further evaluation, and its design continues to be refined as needed. In the process additional resources are collected. Dedicated iLRN Conference workshops continue to be targeted opportunities to collect and update expert data

# iLRN XR RESOURCE EXCHANGE

The iLRN Resource Exchange is launched to the general public. Users are able to add data, but expert educators, developers and scholars are verified and identified as such. In addition, a structured rating system ensures that the best resources and use recommendations rise to the top. Funding is required for staff to verify contributors and monitor content quality

# DISTRIBUTION

The Resource Exchange has to be discoverable to be effective. Every effort is made to link it to library systems and educational resource aggregators, and to publicize it widely

# MAINTAIN & UPDATE

The Resource Exchange needs funding for web hosting and maintenance. Staff is needed for contributor verification and content monitoring as above, but also for updates, like removing entries for obsolete items and dead links. iLRN workshops continue to be opportunities for data collection and follow-up processing may be an occasion to conduct a yearly check of materials. Additional conferences or dedicated workshops may be additional data-collection opportunities
